In 2000 there are occasional visits by police cars from Haddington. There was a manned police station in Gifford till the 1970s with a resident constable who kept a close eye on the parish. Thereafter policing was done from Haddington. There were no facilities in the parish to detain offenders, who were taken to Haddington. There have been no major crimes over the period, but there has been some increase in vandalism (such as damage to cars etc, mainly by bored teenagers). There is not enough police presence.
A neighbourhood watch scheme was introduced 1997/98 with two co-ordinators, Jean Blackadder and Margaret Maslowski. A farm watch scheme was started and more people are installing burglar alarms and security lights.
