The Local History Group at Pencaitland is very small, being a branch of the local Amenity Society (established 1974) with only three or four members; it is about ten years old. There seems to be only a small interest in the subject, unfortunately, though on some of our outings – if the subject attracts – there is a reasonable attendance. The publication Village School: the Story of Education in Pencaitland was produced in 1994, and is still selling; the first run of 200, sold out, so a further 200 were printed. The driving forces behind this research were Ralph Barker, Julie Murphy and Liz Strachan.
