There was no medical or dental practice in Aberlady. For medical advice most villagers attended the long-established surgery in Gullane, with prescriptions dispensed at the Gullane pharmacy. For dental treatment local people might go to Longniddry or North Berwick, but a dental practice was established in Gullane in 1991. Prior to the mid-1980s, before general nursing was separated from midwifery, the district nurse worked from home and sometimes had to travel well beyond the boundaries of Aberlady parish. Subsequently, two district (or community) nurses were based at Gullane surgery.
